What is the Gospel?

What are three defining attributes of a religious person?

Piety, Morality, and Doctrine.  In the Orthodox concept of synergy, all three of these attributes underpin one another and a deficit of one undermines the others.  Of the three, Doctrine is the easiest to skim over and a lack of solid grounding in Orthodox Doctrine is often a reason that young people drift away from the Church and never come back.  Why should we do pious acts?  Why should we be moral people?  Why do we believe what we believe?  These questions are deeply rooted in Doctrine.  Conversely, what good is knowledge of Doctrine without acts of piety and living according to the Law of God?

Drawing inspiration from Fr. Andrew Stephen Damick in a two part episode on his podcast, “Roads From Emmaus” (see Podcasts) titled ‘Doctrine Matters’, we present this three part Lenten Catechetical lecture series, “What is the Gospel?”, in an attempt to begin to answer the ‘Why’ questions.

It is our hope that this series is edifying for you, the inquirer, providing you with an initiation into the core message of the Gospel and how to integrate it into your life in Christ.

Part 1. Jesus is the Messiah

In this first lecture, Father Jeremy Krieg draws heavily from scripture to explore the threefold nature of Messiah-ship: Priesthood, Kingship and Prophecy, and explains how we are called to Messiah-ship ourselves.
